Dear Yuletide Writer
Oct. 22nd, 2022 03:05 pmApparently it's that time again, oop. Sliding this in at the last minute because I didn't have the spoons to write one when I actually signed up...
Hi! This is my second time doing Yuletide, and I'm excited.
My general fic sensibilities are expansive; there are very few things (if any) that I categorically will not read, although there are a couple of specific DNWs I'll describe for individual fandoms I've requested below. Any maturity rating is fine; I read plenty of porn and plenty of perfectly innocuous G-rated stuff.
In terms of character tropes, I particularly enjoy complicated relationships (romantic or otherwise), found family, and reunions. Narratively speaking, I generally prefer an overall optimistic-leaning bent, but I've read and enjoyed darkfic as well.
The Left Hand of Darkness
I read it for the first time on a whim about a year ago because of a very funny discussion about Omegaverse and a friend's assertion that she might actually be into it (in a Hannibal fandom context) if heats were more like kemmer and no one knew what configuration they were going to take on this time. Came for the gender fuckery, bawled my eyes out and read a lot of fic about it for the Genly/Estraven.
DNW: deathfic. (The book was that; don't need more of that for Yuletide, please and thank you xD)
I don't have strong feelings about what pronouns are used for Estraven. I think if I were going to write my own fic, I'd use they/them, but I don't mind the original text's use of masc pronouns, or the idea of switching it up depending on state of kemmer. (Neopronouns I don't love in TLHoD fic just because they're not something I'm used to reading and take more bandwidth to process? But if you really love them I'm not totally averse.)
I'm a sucker for getting-together fic when it comes to them, maybe when they're on the ice, but also it could be after, in a timeline where Estraven lives. Also a huge fan of forced separation followed by rescue, so heck, maybe they get together before the events that have Genly off in a prison camp, and the daring rescue feels even higher-stakes? Or maybe something more low-key, gen-adjacent where they're interacting with more people offworld after their epic journey across the ice.
The Last Kingdom
I don't know why I was *surprised* to see this on the fandom list; it's very AO3-fan-friendly! I wish I'd made it to nominations, because UGH, Sigtryggyr and Stiorra! AHHH. They give me feelings.
But aside from them, I'm very invested in Uhtred and Alfred, either as difficult friends/allies or as a romantic pair, Uhtred and Aethelflaed and their quiet tragedy, and I really enjoy Hild's friendship with Uhtred. (I could *also* see Hild and Aethelflaed getting along famously, so uh, if you want to go there either as gen or shipfic, I'd also be there with bells on!)
It's hard to come up with specific prompts, for which I apologize, but anything exploring one or more of those relationships, I'll probably enjoy.
DNW: A significant part of my love for the show is my eternal early Middle Ages historyboner, so please no modern or "this but in space" sort of AUs.
The Watchmaker of Filigree Street
DNW: deathfic or anything that doesn't end generally positively; I love that they're husbands and they're (eventually) happy.
I'm interested in character studies here, and/or in scenes between the lines of what happens in the book. Can be before, after, or on Thaniel's ill-fated wedding night. (Possibly long before - what is life like for Mori, having the knowledge of his potential futures that he has? How does exactly does he experience that kind of terrible hope, that some day he'll find his love in a foreign country, but all the possibilities for what happens after that are so muddled as to be their own cloud of dread?)
Thank you in advance, and happy Yuletide!
