isabellerecs: ULTIMATE FANFIC TROPE SHOWDOWN
I'm a bit amused/mildly annoyed that A/B/O was as high on my list as it was (which isn't very high, but still) - it's one of those AU tropes I find inherently cringey in most implementations, but it's REALLY popular in two of my major fandoms, so I've ended up reading quite a bit of it over the last few years, some of which was really good (and usually had some kind of twist on it to handle the agency problems the trope can introduce, which is one of my major complaints about it). So while I don't really seek it out, it's no longer something I only read for morbid curiosity reasons...
I'm not at all surprised that Enemies to Friends to Lovers wound up on top. (As I discussed with
shadaras recently, I also enjoy basically all wacky, convoluted permutations that generally fall under the heading "enemies to lovers") :P
Characters Swap Roles AU wound up on the very bottom, and that feels like it wants a little bit of discussion too, so, briefly - these just fundamentally never make much sense to me. Either the "roles" are intrinsically tied up in who the characters are (e.g. in Hannibal) to such an extent that swapping them breaks the characters for me, or it's a situation where while I can conceptualize what the characters would be like in each other's roles, swapping them just brings us to something like the canon dynamic but with the names swapped (e.g. Reaper76). It either completely breaks the characters for me or doesn't feel like a question worth asking.
